Uniform and PE
Uniform and PE
At Longroyde Primary School, comfort and readiness for active learning are valued highly.
In September 2025, an active uniform was introduced for Early Years pupils. This uniform supports freedom of movement and full participation in physical and outdoor activities throughout the school day, eliminating the need for changing into separate PE clothing.
It is important that we all wear the correct uniform, please refer to School Uniform (Parents & Carers menu tab).
School uniform helps us to feel like we are all part of the same team.
PE Day - Wednesday
This will not start until after October half term once the children have settled and they have their house team.

Curriculum
Curriculum
We use Development Matters to plan and guide our curriculum. We have a strong focus on communication and developing a love of reading. Our plans are flexible so that we can build on the interests that the children bring into school.
The Early Years Curriculum consists of seven areas of learning;
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Literacy (reading and writing)
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
In Reception, we encourage children to demonstrate and develop the characteristics of effective learning:
- Playing and Exploring
- Active Learning
- Creating and Thinking Critically
In Reception, the children are observed engaging with the different areas. This helps to determine what type of learners the children are and how they learn best. This especially helps when delivering new concepts and exploring them in alternative ways.
On the website you will find Knowledge Organisers and Curriculum Term Plans which give you more information about what we will learn in the topics we teach each half term.

What We Will Be Learning About
What We Will Be Learning About
To ensure that purposeful and engaging learning takes place, activities and topics are carefully planned around the children’s interests and core stories. The children have access to continuous provision (things that the children have access to throughout the day) as well as adult led activities. Take a look at our knowledge organisers to find out what we will learn in the topics, the key facts and vocabulary.
Reception Topics
- Autumn 1 - Marvelous Me
- Autumn 2 - After Dark
- Spring 1 - Around the World
- Spring 2 - Fantasy and Adventure
- Summer 1 - Come Outside
- Summer 2 - Under the Sea

Outdoor Learning
Outdoor Learning
This is a key area for children to learn in. We have an outdoor extension of our classroom that magnifies what is indoors. Children have the opportunity to explore outside every day and will engage with a range of key areas including a mud kitchen, large wooden blocks and crates, reading and writing shed, climbing wall and a range of PE equipment.

Parents as Partners
Parents as Partners
You are your child’s first and most enduring educators therefore, we value and listen to all of your contributions and encourage you to come and speak to us!
We love to see what your child has learned or achieved at home and like being sent pictures and observations; you can email or add the observation to your child’s online learning journey via Tapestry, (further information below). Login details are given out in the first half term and are a great way for you to see what your child has been learning at school.
Please talk to your child about what they have been learning as this helps them to remember ‘sticky’ knowledge, the knowledge organisers will support this too!

Tapestry Journal
At Longroyde we work hard to develop positive relationships with our families and actively encourage parents and carers to be involved in their child’s learning.
Each child in Nursery and Reception has their own on-line Learning Journey on the Tapestry website, which we use in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us.
The benefits to yourselves from Tapestry being on-line means that you will have secure access, via a website or mobile app, to your child’s Learning Journey.
By logging on with a secure username and password, you will be able to view all your child’s observations, photographs and even videos from their time at Nursery and Reception. You will even receive an email telling you when a new observation or piece of work is available for you to view. This will enable you to follow your child’s individual progress closely and means that you can reflect upon their achievements together at home. In addition to viewing our contributions, we encourage you to add to it by uploading photos and comments, or commenting on observations made by us, so that we can find out about which activities your child really enjoyed!
Tapestry is hosted on secure servers. Further security details are available on request. E-safety is extremely important to us at Longroyde Primary School and each parent will only have access to their own child’s Learning Journey.
Photographs and videos bring your child’s learning experiences to life however do often include your child at play with other children, for example in a group of children pretending to be Goldilocks and the Three Bears in the home corner.
Therefore, we ask for your consent with this, you will be sent a consent form to show that you understand and agree with our guidelines. We will send you detailed information on how to view/use your child’s Learning Journey.
If you do not have access to email your child is still able to have an online Learning Journey which you can access through the use of school computer equipment during specific dates throughout the year.

Before Your Child Starts
Starting school is a big step for all children, even if they have attended a nursery. Here are some things that you can look at and do with your child to help get them ready for school!
Talk, Talk, Talk!
- Talk to your child when you are playing together
- Talk about what they are looking at
- Talk about things as they happen, for example when you are unpacking the shopping!
- Have fun with nursery rhymes and songs
- Encourage your child to listen to different sounds, for example, cars/ animals etc
- Limit the amount of time watching TV, playing on technology
- Help your child to use more words, for example if they say “car” you might say “yes, it is a red car.”
- Always respond when your child says something
