Phonics & Reading Schemes

Daily discrete phonics sessions are taught from the start of Early Years, through Key Stage One and into Key Stage Two where required.

The Government recommended ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme is followed with the aim to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.

Our primary reading scheme used for beginner readers is ‘Songbirds’ by Oxford Reading Tree which supports our thorough and systematic approach to learning to read through synthetic phonics.

Our children are also exposed to a wide range of genres, and once they become confident decoders are able to access and independently read a wide range of texts through the ‘Accelerated Reader’ scheme, supporting and furthering their comprehension skills.
